Inhibition of superoxide anion radical release and plasma cathepsin D activities by α2-macroglobulin
Description
Peripheral blood of healthy volunteers was irradiated with 60Co (5-20 Gy)). One hour after irradiation, the amount of superoxide anion radical release from polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) increased, and the activities of cathepsin D in plasma also increased, showing a positive correlation between them (r = 0.7215, P < 0.01). It was revealed that when α2-macroglobulin (a blood preparation) was added one hour before irradiation, a positive correlation between the decreases of cathepsin D activities and superoxide anion radical release from PMNs (r = 0.7160, P < 0.01) was observed. These results suggest that the effects of α2-macroglobulin in radiation injury may be related to its inhibition of proteinases and elimination of excessive superoxide anion radical
