Screening of some congeners/chelators for the possible decorporation of radio - cesium in rats

Description
The elemental salts of sodium and potassium which are known to share some of the common properties of cesium because of their virtue of being in the same group of the Periodical Table, as cesium; besides some well known metal complexing agents like Cyclodextrin and Crown Ether, are examined for their effect in decreasing the whole body retention (WBR) of radio cesium (Cs) in rats. However, none of these compounds showed any appreciable reduction in the WBR of Cs, compared to the control, untreated animals, for the first two weeks. Rats from one of the groups, started showing increased clearance of Cs after it was changed to the treatment of new calcium and iron based compound (prepared in our lab.), from third week onwards. The results of the present study, unequivocally, demonstrate that the salts of sodium and potassium and even known metal-complexing agents are not effective in the decorporation of Cs from in vivo system.
