Current disposal practices and future expectations of the mixed waste disposal

Creators

  • 1. Chem-Nuclear Systems, Barnwell, SC

Description

Chem-Nuclear Systems, Inc., operates a low-level burial facility in Barnwell, South Carolina, under a license from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. This license contains specific conditions which prohibit the receipt of a variety of mixed waste streams. The license also provides flexibility, however, to evaluate mixed waste streams on a case-by-case basis to determine whether the radiological hazard or the chemical hazard is greater. If it is determined that the radiologic hazard is greater, specific analyses are conducted to develop an appropriate waste form, waste package and burial method for a particular mixed waste stream. If it is determined that the chemical hazard is greater than the radiological hazard, the waste stream is unacceptable for burial at Barnwell
