Description
Elastofibroma dorsi is a rare benign tumor-like lesion which occurs in the subscapular region. We investigated MRI findings in 6 cases of this disease. MRI clearly demonstrated all 12 elastofibromas in the bilateral subscapular regions, although clinically the mass was detected on only one side in two cases. On T1- and T2-weighted images, elastofibromas showed low signal intensity similar to that of skeletal muscle, and streaky structures with high signal intensity identical to that of fat tissue were found in all masses. Mild enhancement with Gd-DTPA was noted. These MRI findings corresponded well to the histological features of surgical specimens in three cases. In conclusion, MRI provides useful information for diagnosing elastofibroma dorsi in conjunction with clinical features. (author)
