Characterisation of high level radioactive liquid waste from PREFRE-2 for vitrification at AVS, Tarapur

Description
In view of vitrification of HLW from PREFRE-II, the chemical and radiometric characterization of the waste received from the waste tank was carried out using different techniques first time. The nature and total solid are comparable with old HLW from PREFRE-I. The concentration of almost all elements, except Na and U, are higher in comparison to the old HLW. The concentration of phosphorous is about 3.8 times higher. Hence the limiting factor for waste loading to glass will be phosphate content. Though the activity content of this HLW is about three times high the value is well within the design value of the waste transfer trench. Hence HLW can be transferred from PREFRE-II to TWMP through the existing waste transfer trench and can be treated in AVS. (author)
