José Cabrera Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning Project, Spain

The José Cabrera nuclear power plant is a single loop pressurized water reactor (PWR) of 160 MW(e) located in Almonacid de Zorita (110 km from Madrid). The plant started operation in 1968 and was shut down in April 2006. In February 2010, Enresa was authorized to initiate the dismantling of the José Cabrera nuclear power plant and received transfer of the site from the owner. This is the first total dismantling project programmed to be completed in Spain and has an objective of achieving green field status by 2016. The activities most relevant to this publication will consist of the removal and management of large components from the primary circuit, reactor internals, vessel, pressurizer, steam generator and coolant pump. These components should be size reduced to comply with the packaging requirements of the El Cabril intermediate and low level waste (LLW) repository. Four containers, including the most activated internals, will be stored in the dry spent fuel storage on-site. Upon completion of decommissioning, the site will be returned to the owner
