Low temperature behaviour of HoBi

  • 1. Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule, Zurich (Switzerland). Lab. fuer Festkoerperphysik

Description

Low temperature measurements indicate that HoBi undergoes a first-order transition to a pseudotetragonal antiferromagnetic structure at Tsub(N) = 5.72 K. The gross features of HoBi are similar to those of HoSb, and its behaviour also appears to be close to tricritical. Unlike HoSb, however, which contracts in the c direction at Tsub(N), its axial ratio c/a is greater than unity. Moreover the magnetic-field-induced transitions in HoBi occur in stages which strongly depend on the external stress and the magnetic history. (Auth.)
