Strongly polarized 3He

Melting-curve experiments in highly polarized liquid 3He seem to show anomalous behaviour of the susceptibility. We are reminded of how this melting curve is affected by very high magnetic fields and how it is possible to obtain the liquid susceptibility of this polarized liquid using a melting model. To try to confirm the susceptibility behaviour, we have performed sound-velocity measurements in bulk polarized liquid. The results show a clear m2 linear dependence of the sound velocity at 200 mK. This result is compared with available predictions and with previous experimental work and is used to deduce the best experimental requirements for highly polarized 3He studies. (18 refs, 4 figs.)
