Probability-based code criteria for structural design

  • 1. Johns Hopkins Univ., Baltimore, MD (USA). Dept. of Civil Engineering

Description

Probabilistic approaches are becoming common in safety evaluations of nuclear plants and their systems. Many of the limitations in computational capabilities and in the supporting data bases that at first inhibited the use of probabilistic methods in structural code development are being overcome. It now is feasible to develop practical load combination rules and strength criteria that are consistent with a set of code performance objectives expressed in terms of desired reliabilities.
