Radiocarbon dates and Late Glacial blown-sand movements in NE Hungary

Description

A large area of the NE part of the Great Hungarian Plain is covered with wind-blown sand. In the exposures of the sand dunes a thin fossil soil layer was separating blown-sand strata of different formations. From seven different sites 17 charcoal samples were collected, and the measured 14C ages range from 11,000 to 12,900 BC. The radiocarbon dates indicate directly that in the Late Glacial there were two phases of blown sand movements (in the Older Dryas and Younger Dryas periods), and the fossil soil evolved in the Boelling or Alleroed periods. The wind-blown sand underlying the fossil soil developed in the Upper Pleniglacial which was the main period of sand movements in Hungary. (author). 1 fig., 1 tab., 13 refs
