Comparison of 170Tm, 169Yb, 99mTc, 133Xe and 57Co sources for the evaluation of the shielding of X-ray rooms and primary shielding specifications for 99mTc, 133Xe and 57Co
Description
Five radioisotopes (170Tm, 169Yb, 99mTc, 133Xe and 57Co) were chosen for the evaluation of equivalent lead and concrete thicknesses for diagnostic X-ray rooms. Using experimental transmission curves for large fields of ionizing photons emitted and crossing thicknesses of 0 - 4 mm of lead and 0 - 20 cm of concrete, one can choose the most proper sources taking into account the useful life of the radionuclides, the time distribution of shielding evaluations to be made, their availability, the foreseen shielding thicknesses as well as the types of radiation meters available. Choices of sources are proposed for various situations encountered. Primary shielding specifications are also given for various radioisotopic activities, workloads, distances and exposure doses in air and dose equivalents at the tissue entrance surface for 133Xe and 99mTc and 57Co. These can therefore be added to the primary and secondary shielding requirements published elsewhere for 170Tm and 169Yb

Les auteurs ont choisi cinq radioisotopes (170Tm, 169Yb, 99mTc, 133Xe et 57Co) pour l'evaluation des epaisseurs equivalentes en plomb et en beton des parois des salles de rayons X diagnostiques. A partir des courbes de transmission experimentales pour de grands champs de photons ionisants emis et traversant des epaisseurs de 0 a 4 mm de plomb et de 0 a 20 cm de beton, on peut choisir les sources les plus appropriees, compte tenu de la duree utile de vie de chaque radioelement, de la repartition des evaluations de blindage a faire dans le temps, de leur approvisionnement, des epaisseurs de blindage prevues ainsi que des sortes de compteurs disponibles. Ce travail propose des choix de sources selon les situations rencontrees. Il donne egalement les specifications de blindage primaire pour diverses activites radioisotopiques, charges de travail, distances et doses d'exposition dans l'air et equivalents de dose a la surface d'entree des tissus pour 133Xe, 99mTc et 57Co. Celles-ci s'ajoutent aux specifications de blindage primaire et secondaire pour les sources de 170Tm et de 169Yb publiees par ailleursAdditional details
