Comparison of distribution of radioiodine observed in brown algae and a diffusion simulation on northeast coastal area of Japan

Description
Since 2006, 131I (radioiodine) has often been detected in the seaweed 'Eisenia bicyclis (arame)' on the coast of Miyagi Prefecture. In order to ascertain its origin, the authors performed a material diffusion simulation for the sea area around Onagawa. The simulation result is as follows. In order for 0.3 Bq/kg of 131I to be detected in the sea area in front of the power plant, it is necessary to presume 0.5 L/sec of filtrated water leakage, which is contrary to the fact. In addition, the concentration distribution obtained from the simulation is completely different from the actual detection situation. Therefore, it is inferred that 131I is not caused by the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station. (A.O.)

2006年以降の宮城県沿岸の海藻のアラメから、しばしば放射性ヨウ素の131Iが検出されている。その起源の推定のために、女川湾周辺海域における物質拡散シミュレーションを実施した。そのシミュレーション結果から、発電所前面海域に生息するアラメ中に0.3Bq/kg生の131Iが検出されるためには毎秒0.5Lもの炉水流出という、事実に反する仮定をしなければならないこと及びシミュレーションから得られた濃度分布が実際の検出状況と全く異なることから、131Iが女川原子力発電所に起因するものではないと推察された。(著者)Additional details
