Simple method of improving the spatial resolution of proportional chambers

  • 1. AN SSSR, Leningrad. Inst. Yadernoj Fiziki

Description

A method is described for improvofg the three-dimensional resolution of wire-type proportional chambers. The method consists in rotating the chamber about an axis parallel to the signal wire, which results in some electrons entering the registration zone of one signal wire, the others passing into that of an adjacent one. The probability of activating two adjacent wires increases, and the probability of activating only a single wire diminishes. At a rotation angle where the above probabilities become identical, the registration accuracy is doubled without any additional channels of the recording electronics. The results of the experimental verification of the method proposed are given
