Status report on the search for the top quark
Description
The current status of the search for the top quark in e+e- and panti-p collider experiments is described. This report shows that: 1) the models with only five quarks are ruled out by experience, so the top quark requested by the standard model has to be observed. 2) The PETRA experience imposes for the top mass a lower limit of 23.4 GeV. 3) The UA2 Collaboration, when looking for electron + two-jet events, found no clear signal, but their electron background seems to be too high to be able to extract the 2-3 events predicted by the W → tanti-b decay. 4) Finally the UA1 Collaboration confirm the events observed in 1984 by observing 6 new electron candidates in the electron + two-jet channel. These events as well as the large amount of electron + one-jet events cannot be explained without a substantial production of the top quark either from W → tanti-b decay or from direct panti-p → tanti-t + X
