Reactor design concept and commissioning test program of the upgraded JRR-3
- 1. Dept. of Research Reactor Operation, Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., 319-11 Tokai-mura, Naka-gun, Ibaraki-ken (Japan)
Description
The Japan Research Reactor No.3 (JRR-3) of JAERI had been operating since 1962. After 21 years of operation, an upgrading program was planned to respond to the demand for better neutron beam and irradiation conditions. The whole reactor core with the biological shield was removed by the one-piece-removal method, and a new reactor has been constructed at the same place. This paper reports on the new reactor, designed to produce thermal and fast neutron flux of over 2 x 1014 n/cm2 · sec. The construction of the upgraded JRR-3 is almost completed. Now the commissioning tests are in progress
