Recent activities in China, Korea for a radioactive waste repository

Description
China and Korea are developing nuclear power generation. Their recent statue, future and an approach to a radioactive waste repository are stated. China operates nine nuclear reactors that generate about 7,000,000 kW of electricity and increase to 12,000,000 kW in 2010. Korea operates 20 reactors with 17,716,000 kW and increases 8 reactors until 2015. On china, the kinds of radioactive waste, the solution of radioactive waste repository, and the working system are explained. China builds a prototype disposal site at first and verifies functions by many tests and then to build the final disposal site where keep HLW (high-level waste) by geological disposal. On Korea, the spent fuel is stored in the intermediate storage. MOCIE/KHNP system, Korea, has invited publicly the medium and low-level waste sites from 2000 to 2005 and one site was decided in January 2006. The future plans of two countries are described. (S.Y.)

原子力発電の推進にあたり、発電に伴う放射性廃棄物の処分をどのように進めるかは重要な問題である。近年、経済発展のめざましい中国では、急増するエネルギー需要に対応するために、電力設備の増強の一環として、環境にもやさしい原子力発電所の建設計画が相次いで浮上している。一方、すでに世界第6位の原子力発電設備容量を持つ韓国では、今後十数年の電力需要の伸び率は大幅に鈍ると予想しているが、それでも電源開発投資の約半分が原子力発電所の建設に充てられると予測されており、原子力発電推進の方針は継続される見通しである。本稿では、このように原子力開発を活発に進めている中国、韓国での放射性廃棄物処分に関する考え方、現在の状況、今後の方針などについて紹介する。(日本)Additional details
