Optimization of beam dynamics parameters of 1 MeV deuteron RFQ for neutron generation

  • 1. Radiological Safety Division, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam (India)

Description

Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) linear accelerator (LINAC) based pulsed neutron source based on 9Be(d,n)10B reaction is being built at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research for standardization of nuclear waste assay techniques and neutron measurement techniques. It consists of an ion source, Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), 1 MeV REQ accelerator and Beryllium target. Beam dynamics design of 352 MHz 4-vane RFQ accelerator has been done to accelerate the 50 keV deuterium ions to 1 MeV with transmission and acceleration efficiencies 99.8 % and 91.5 % respectively. LIDOS.RFQ beam dynamics design code is used for this purpose. Optimization of beam dynamics parameters and the corresponding error analysis on the deviation of parameters of matched beam envelope, RF and ion sources from the optimized values are presented.
