Electro-decontamination of cementitious materials
Description
The end of operations in nuclear facilities is followed by various decontamination and decommissioning operations. Similar to other electrochemical techniques such as re-alkalinisation and chloride extraction, an electrokinetic remediation process is being developed as a specific method for deeply contaminated concrete structures. Two cements, an ordinary Portland and a 30% slag cement, have been chosen for the conducted work.Mortars and concretes are contaminated by adding non-radioactive cesium in the batch water, cesium being a representative specie of deep encountered contaminants. The conducted experimental and numerical work have focused on three main aspects: characterizing and understanding the cesium transport mechanisms, assessing the electro-remediation process at lab-scale and evaluating the real scale constraints. Using existing knowledge of chloride transport mechanisms, experiments have been conducted to characterize the cesium interactions with cementitious phase and ionic transport in saturated materials. A numerical model have then been developed to describe the cesium transport, taking into account the ionic activity coefficients and interactions with solid phases. Indeed, lab-scale experiments have demonstrated that electro-remediation reduced to 20-50% the initially contained cesium after a three weeks treatment. Treated samples analysis confirmed that deeply diffused cesium is migrating to the surface. Moreover, conducted experiments showed the consistency between the different materials properties, applied currents and decontamination efficiency. A comparative analysis of experiments carried on samples with different shapes, formulations and contamination modes helped assessing and optimizing the process efficiency for various continuous and variable applied currents. Finally, electro-remediation experiments have also been carried on 1m2 concrete slabs. Liquid catholyte and anolyte solutions are replaced by alumina gels and cellulose pastes. Lab-scale experiments demonstrated the good substitutability between liquid solutions and the two alternative electrolytes, however, rheological and drying behavior of gels and pastes still dwells on the process efficiency. Analysis of concrete slabs samples after treatment showed ionic migration of cesium, sodium and potassium. Hence, the efficiency and feasibility of electro-remediation have been demonstrated. Yet, the process still needs optimization and validation on real contaminated structures. (author)
Abstract (French)
Les materiaux cimentaires representent une part importante du volume des dechets nucleaires. Le procede d'electro-decontamination permet d'assainir en profondeur les matrices cimentaires et de reduire les volumes des dechets. Le developpement du procede s'appuie sur l'experience acquise par les techniques de realcanisation et de dechloruration des betons armes. Au cours de cette etude, deux ciments, un ciment ordinaire de Portland et un ciment a 30% de laitier, ont ete choisis pour gacher mortiers et betons. Ils ont ete contamines a la gachee par du cesium inactif, l'espece la plus representative des contaminations profondes. Trois principaux objectifs ont guide les travaux experimentaux et numerique: la caracterisation et une meilleure comprehension du transport ionique du cesium, l'evaluation du procede a l'echelle du laboratoire et le passage a une echelle representative du chantier. La caracterisation des proprietes de transfert du cesium s'est appuyee sur les protocoles existants pour les chlorures. Une etude comparative de la retention et du transport des chlorures et du cesium ont permis de decrire et de quantifier les phenomenes observes. Un modele de transport ionique a alors ete developpe en prenant en compte les termes de force ionique et les equilibres des interactions des alcalins avec les phases cimentaires. Les applications du procede a l'echelle du laboratoire ont montre la coherence entre efficacite de la decontamination, caracteristiques du materiau et les grandeurs electriques imposees. Il a notamment ete demontre que le procede permet de s'affranchir d'une part importante du cesium (entre 50% et 80% en trois semaines) et mobilise le cesium profond depuis le voisinage des armatures. Les effets de la geometrie de l'echantillon, du mode de contamination et des courants electriques, ainsi que le suivi de la corrosion et de la deformation des materiaux ont egalement ete etudies. Des essais de decontamination sur grandes dalles ont aussi ete realises pour estimer les effets d'echelle. Les compartiments electrolytiques sont remplaces par des electrolytes solides, gels et pates de papier. Si le role substitutif de ces electrolytes a ete demontre, les contraintes liees a leur comportement rheologique et leur cinetique de sechage restent presentes. L'analyse du solide apres decontamination a mis en evidence la migration du cesium mais aussi celle du sodium et du potassium. Enfin, l'efficacite et la faisabilite du procede ont ete largement demontrees tout au long de ce travail, neanmoins, un travail d'optimisation et de validation reste aujourd'hui necessaireFiles
