Description

The Office of the Supervising Scientist was established to implement laws, develop procedures and undertake research related to environmental protection of the uranium mining areas of the Alligator Rivers Region in the Northern Territory. Information on administration, environmental protection arrangements, supervisory and assessment activities and research activities is presented. The research projects described are concerned with ecological systems in the region and the investigation of the probable short-term impact on these systems of the release of contaminants resulting from uranium mining operations. Appendices on legislation, agreements, authorisations and approvals, environmental requirements for the Ranger and Nabarlek projects, and environmental infringements and incidents are included
