A high energy ion scattering facility for condensed matter physics and materials science studies

  • 1. Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar (India)

Description

A high energy ion scattering experimental facility has been set up in the Ion Beam Laboratory at the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar. Some examples of Rutherford backscattering and channeling studies using 1-3 MeV He+ ions from the recently installed 3 MV tandem Pelletron Accelerator are presented. Composition analysis of Cu3Au and high Tc superconductor material Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8 and interdiffusion studies at metal-semiconductor interfaces are presented. Planar and axial channeling measurements were made on several systems. For silicon(lll) axial channeling the measured critical angle, ψsub(1/2) = 0.85deg, and the minimum yield χsub(min) = 0.055 are slightly higher than the theoretical values of 0.65 and 0.03 respectively. Further channeling measurements are presented for a Cu3Au crystal and an ion beam synthesized three layer epitaxial system Si/CoSi2(680A)/Si(880A). (author). 23 refs., 18 figs
