Nuclear power generation in energy plan

  • 1. Agency of Natural Resources and Energy, Tokyo (Japan)

Description

Now energy crisis is clamored loudly in the world. Major countries in Europe and America are striving for the change of their energy policy. Japan is also being forced to reduce the dependence of energy on overseas and petroleum. The Gross Energy Examination Board presented the interim report in July 1974, in which the promotion of nuclear power development and reduction of the dependence of energy on overseas and petroleum were discussed otn the basis that fundamental energy policy is required to put emphasis on securing the stable supply of energy. Nuclear power generation in Japan amounts to 16,570 MW including the plants under construction. It is necessary to promote postively the application of nuclear energy, since its cost is very cheap, the defrayment of foreign currency is low, and the stability of fuel supply corresponds to domestically obtainable energy, as compared with petroleum combuation. However, further effort is also needed for smoothing the siting problems. (Wakatsuki, Y.)
