Two dimensional meson theory

Description

We propose a bilocal quantum field theory as a theory of mesons in two dimensions. A particular quantization scheme of this theory is equivalent to two dimensional QCD. The semi-classical approximation of the meson theory is equivalent to the 1/Nc approximation of QCD. The semi-classical meson spectrum is obtained and agrees with results of 't Hooft in leading order of 1/Nc. It is proposed that this meson theory is the gauge fixed version of some open string field theory. Pure QCD in four dimensions is also studied in the light front formalism. It is shows that the Wilson loops satisfy a simple set of canonical commutation relations. (author). 10 refs
