Pyrolytic method of tritium detection in a graphite matrix

Description
The method described below can be used for absolute measurements of the tritium content in the graphite moderator of gas-cooled high-temperature reactors. The graphite specimen is pyrolysed at a temperature of about 8000C in a specially developed quartz apparatus, and the combustion gases are led into phosphorus pentoxide absorption tube across a quartz wool filter which retains solid fission and activation products. The contents of this tube are dissolved in H2O, and the tritium content of the solution is determined by scintillation measurements. Factors influencing the method as well as its reproducibility and yield are discussed. Decontamination factors of < 104 are reacted for the fission products. At very high concentrations of fission products, corrections can be made by γ-spectrometry or Cerenkov measurements. (RB/AK)

Das hier beschriebene Verfahren eignet sich zur Absolutmessung des Tritiumgehaltes in Moderatorgraphit gasgekuehlten Hochtemperaturreaktoren. In einer dazu entwickelten Quarzapparatur wird die Graphitprobe bei ca. 8000C pyrolytisch aufgeschlossen und die Verbrennungsgase ueber ein Quarzwollefilter - das feste Spalt- und Aktivierungsprodukte zurueckhaelt - in ein Phosphorpentoxid-Absorptionsrohr geleitet. Der Inhalt dieses Rohres wird in H2O geloest und der Tritiumgehalt der Loesung durch Szintillationsmessung bestimmt. Die die Messung sowie ihre Reproduzierbarkeit und die Ausbeute beeinflussenden Faktoren werden diskutiert. Bezueglich der Spaltprodukte werden Dekontaminationsfaktoren < 104 erreicht. Bei sehr hohen Spaltproduktkonzentrationen ist durch γ-Spektrometrie oder Cerenkovmessung eine Korrektur moeglich. (RB)
