High intensity accelerators for kaon factories

  • 1. British Columbia Univ., Vancouver (Canada). Dept. of Physics

Description

Kaon factories would provide beams 100-1000 times more intense than those available at present from accelerators in the 5-30 GeV range. Beams of slow K's and anti p's and of medium-energy γsub(e)'s would be of particular interest. Significant new information would be made accessible on weak decay processes and symmetry violations, the baryonic resonance spectrum, the kaon-nuclear interaction, hypernulei, exotic atoms, antiproton interactions and neutrino behaviour. The various accelerators proposed include both fast-cycling synchrotrons providing 30-100 μA proton beams in the 10-30 GeV range and superconducting isochronous ring cyclotrons giving 100-400 μA at up to 8 GeV.
