Canada leads world in production of uranium

The Canadian uranium industry produced more than 8,100 tonnes of uranium in 1991. The decrease from 1990 is mainly attributed to mine closures at Elliot Lake Ontario. For the same reason, reserves shrank to 459,000 tonnes in 1992 from 594,000 in 1991. The main focus for exploration is the Athabasca basin in northern Saskatchewan. Investment in exploration by nine companies at 67 sites totaled C$ 44 million in 1991.
