Description

We study 8-dimensional compact manifolds which are either products of spheres and complex projective planes, or coset spaces Lsub(pqrst) of the type SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)/SU(2)xU(1). It is shown that for Freund-Rubin compactification, product manifolds are unstable for a wide range of cosmological constants. For the coset spaces Lsub(pqrst), we find cases where the harmonic expansion of a spinor or a vector-spinor in 12 dimensions contains the usual quark and lepton representations, and also show that it is possible to choose the metric to obtain an Einstein space.
