e, γ, π and μ: 4 probes offered by the SLA for studies on the nucleus

Description

The Saclay linear accelerator was originally designed to use the electromagnetic interaction in research on the structure of the nucleus. Unlike experiments with hadrons the data obtained are independent of the reaction mechanism. For this reason experiments carried out with electron and photon beams are the main concern of the laboratory. Secondary beams of pions and muons are the object of much activity. The properties of low-energy pion beams or, in the case of muons, the pulsed structure of the beam are used here

Abstract (French)

L'accelerateur lineaire de Saclay fut concu a l'origine pour utiliser l'interaction electromagnetique dans l'etude de la structure du noyau. Contrairement aux experiences menees avec des hadrons, les informations que l'on obtient sont independantes du mecanisme de reaction. C'es pourquoi, les experiences realisees avec les faisceaux d'electrons et de photons restent la preoccupation majeure du laboratoire. Une intense activite s'est developpee autour des faisceaux secondaires de pions et de muons. Les proprietes des faisceaux de pions de basse energie ou, en muons, la structure pulsee du faisceau sont ici exploitees
