An immunoelectron microscopic study of the relationship between viruses from spontaneous mouse osteoma and spontaneous and radiation-induced mouse osteosarcoma

Typical C-type viruses have been observed in both spontaneous and radiation-induced mouse osteosarcomas but atypical C-type virus particles have been observed in spontaneous and virus-induced mouse osteomas. In this study the serological relationship between the envelope antigens of some of these viruses was investigated using the indirect immunoperoxidase technique. The results indicate that OS-2 (a virus growing in a cell line derived from a 224Ra-induced C3H x 101 mouse osteosarcoma) and FBJ virus, from radiation-induced and spontaneous osteosarcoma respectively, share similar envelope antigens whereas neither shares common envelope antigens with C3H-OA virus (isolated from a spontaneous osteoma in a 101 strain mouse and further propagated on C3H mouse fibroblast cells) from spontaneous osteoma.
