Radiation safety during the commissioning trials of synchrotron radiation beamlines of Indus-2

Description
There are 26 numbers synchrotron radiation beam lines planned to be installed in Indus-2 for various research applications. Out of them three numbers are commissioned and four are under commissioning trial stage and several are under installation. All the beamlines are housed in properly designed shielded hutches. Major radiation hazards present in the beamlines are synchrotron radiation and Bremsstrahlung radiation. During the operation of these beamlines radiation levels are monitored within and outside the hutches. During initial trial runs streaming of radiation to accessible areas through gaps in the hutch structure and overlaps was observed. Shield augmentation, reducing gap between overlaps etc has found to be effective in preventive streaming to accessible areas. The present paper describes the radiation safety features, surveillance program and radiation levels in and around synchrotron radiation beamlines hutches of Indus-2. (author)
