Criteria for comparative evaluation of alternative waste management concepts for nuclear power plants

Description

A detailed comparison of the two nuclear waste management concept, i.e. with reprocessing and Pu recovery or with direct storage of spent fuel elements is impossible because of the subjective aspects involved. For this reason, only problems relating to environmental impact, economics and nonproliferation were discussed. The reprocessing concept was found to have better prospects for the future. Exports, public acceptance, international nuclear safeguards, and radioecological aspects must be considered. (DG)

Abstract (German)

Ein umfassender Vergleich der beiden Entsorgungskonzepte mit WA und Pu-Rueckfuehrung bzw. mit direkter Einlagerung abgebrannter BE erscheint aufgrund subjektiver Aspekte unmoeglich. Es wurden daher aus dem komplexen Problemkreis nur die ausgewaehlt, die die Umwelt, Oekonomie und Nichtverbreitung von Kernwaffen betreffen. Die guenstigeren Zukunftsperspektiven spielen beim Konzept mit WA eine wesentliche Rolle. Auch die Exportsituation, oeffentliche Akzeptanz, internationale Kernmaterialueberwachung und die Radiooekologie sind zu beruecksichtigen. (DG)
