Existence of (n, γf) process on 235U nucleus and uranium X-ray yields

Description

Measurements of x- quanta yield preceding the resonance neutron fission of 235U nucleus are described. The measurements were taken on a 57 m flight base of the IBR-30 reactor operating in the booster regime with an electron linear accelerator. Such conditions provided resolution of neutron resonances in the range from 2 to 21 eV. A multilayer fission chamber with the 2mg/3cm2 layer thickness containing 2 g of uranium enriched with 235U to 90% served as a target and also as a fast detector of fission fragments. The electronic circuit represents that of fast-slow coincidences. The preliminary results show the dependence of the x- quanta yield on the fission width of the neutron resonance GAMMAsub(f) that may be explained by the (n, γf) process occurring on 235U nucleus. In this case it turns out that the estimate of the width of such a process is approximately 4 MeV, and the Ml transitions predominate between γ-transitions preceding fission
