Adrenal simulation by renal uptake of /sup 99m/Tc diphosphonate after radiotherapy
Description
Accumulation of radiolabeled phosphate compounds in soft tissues has been described in most organs of the body, secondary to either infarction or heterotopic calcification. No cases of adrenal uptake have been reported, but it seems reasonable to assume that adrenal infarction might result in similar uptake. We recently encountered a middle-aged woman with breast carcinoma who had increased uptake of /sup 99m/Tc diphosphonate overlying the upper poles of both kidneys on a bone scan. The possibility that she had developed adrenal metastases with infarction was considered until a history of radiation therapy explained the bone scan image
