To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 as planned, France must drastically reduce its use of the most carbon-intensive energies (gas, oil and coal). Our total energy consumption will decrease, but our consumption of decarbonized electricity will increase significantly. In February 2022, in Belfort, France, President Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to massively develop renewable energies while modernizing the nuclear fleet. Does this mean the future is all mapped out? No, say the authors of this book. Firstly, because we shouldn't forget that the French government has also set itself the salutary objective of strengthening our industrial base: our electricity needs will therefore be higher than announced. Secondly, even if the nuclear fleet is renewed at a very steady pace, it will necessarily be supplemented by significant renewable capacities, which will also have to be deployed on a massive scale. Finally, this unprecedented configuration, in which nuclear and renewable energies will complement each other, will also require the development of new means of flexibility (demand modulation, import-export, storage) to preserve the constant balance between supply and demand. This book provides a comprehensive, cost-optimized overview of possible energy mixes up to 2050, based on demand trends, supply renewal and the country's climate commitments. In so doing, it reveals the main energy technologies in which it would be advisable to invest as a matter of priority. In addition to enlightening the general public on the essential issue of energy sovereignty, it offers useful food for thought for public decision-makers and businesses alike
Abstract (French)
Pour atteindre comme prevu la neutralite carbone en 2050, la France doit reduire drastiquement son utilisation des energies les plus carbonees (gaz, petrole et charbon). Notre consommation totale d'energie va diminuer mais notre consommation d'electricite decarbonee va s'accroitre tres sensiblement. Le president Emmanuel Macron a donc annonce en fevrier 2022 a Belfort sa volonte de developper massivement les energies renouvelables tout en modernisant le parc nucleaire. L'avenir est-il tout trace pour autant? Non, montrent les auteurs de cet ouvrage. D'abord parce qu'il ne faudrait pas oublier que l'executif s'est egalement donne pour objectif - salutaire - de renforcer notre base industrielle: nos besoins en electricite seront donc plus eleves qu'annonce. Ensuite, meme si le renouvellement du parc nucleaire est mene a un rythme tres soutenu, celui-ci sera necessairement complete par d'importantes capacites renouvelables, a deployer massivement elles aussi. Enfin, cette configuration inedite, ou nucleaire et EnR se completeront, reclamera egalement de developper de nouveaux moyens de flexibilite (modulation de la demande, imports-exports, stockage) pour preserver l'equilibre constant entre offre et demande. Cet ouvrage propose un tableau prospectif complet des mix energetiques possibles a l'horizon 2050, en optimisant les couts, sous contrainte d'evolution de la demande, de renouvellement de l'offre et des engagements climatiques du pays. Ce faisant, il met au jour les principales technologies energetiques dans lesquelles il est opportun d'investir en priorite. En plus d'eclairer les citoyens sur la question essentielle de la souverainete energetique, il offre des pistes de reflexion d'une grande utilite pour les decideurs publics et les entreprises
