The role of basic research in the development of new processes

In many cases fundamental research is the starting point for the development of technical processes. This development will reach the aims successfully, if during the different phases - laboratory, semitechnical-plant, pilot plant, demonstration - results obtained from fundamental research can be used continuously. Also problems arising during the performance of the projects have to be solved by fundamental research. This interaction is discussed taking as examples the process development in the field of activated carbon application in energy- and environmental protection techniques and a modern coal gasification process development with nuclear process heat. Abstract (German)

Eine breitangelegte Grundlagenforschung ist haeufig Voraussetzung fuer den Beginn einer gezielten Entwicklung von technischen Verfahren. Diese kann nur dann erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden, wenn waehrend der unterschiedlichen Entwicklungsstadien - Labor, Halbtechnik, Pilotmasstab, Demonstration - kontinuierlich Ergebnisse der Grundlagenforschung einfliessen und sich bei der Entwicklung ergebende Fragestellungen durch die Grundlagenforschung erfolgreich loesen lassen. Diese Wechselwirkung wird an drei Beispielen aus dem Bereich der Anwendung von Aktivkohlen in der Energietechnik und fuer den Umweltschutz sowie in der Entwicklung eines modernen Verfahrens zur Kohlevergasung mit Kernreaktorwaerme dargelegt.
