The percolation approach in nuclear physics

Description

Nuclear collisions at intermediate energies show up two different regimes: spallation and multifragmentation. We have developed a simple model of nuclear reactions that is based on percolation. This model exhibits the transition between the two possible regimes. Parameters appearing in percolation are related to the reactions conditions. With the help of simulations and also analytically, we can calculate various quantities such as mass yields, linear momentum transfers and fragments multiplicities. The agreement with experimental data is, generally, rather good. Thus, we can say that percolation, though schematic, appears as a useful framework to discuss heavy ions collisions at various incident energies

Abstract (French)

Les collisions de noyaux aux energies intermediaires mettent en evidence deux regimes possibles: la spallation et la multifragmentation. Nous avons developpe un modele simple de reactions nucleaires base sur la percolation et qui permet de rendre compte de la transition entre ces deux regimes. Les parametres intervenant dans la percolation sont relies aux conditions de reaction. Ce modele permet, a l'aide de simulations et aussi analytiquement, de calculer diverses quantites parmi lesquelles les courbes de rendement en masse, le moment lineaire transmis a la cible ou la multiplicite de fragments produits dans les collisions centrales. La comparaison avec les donnees experimentales se revelant assez satisfaisante, nous pouvons dire que la percolation offre un cadre interessant, quoique schematique, pour l'etude des collisions d'ions lourds a des energies variees
