Description
The paper gives a general description of the natural radioactivity enhanced by numerous underground coal mines in Upper Silesia. The radiation of miners, including the system of monitoring and the data on the present and past state of radiation hazard are described as well as the main requirements of legal regulations. The monitoring includes: radon progeny, radioactive sediments and waters with high radium concentrations occurring in Upper Silesia. Some information concerning prevention measures are also included. Mine waters with high radium concentration released from coal mines into the environment cause enhancement of natural radioactivity in rivers and in their vicinity. The results of investigations of this enhancement are reviewed including the effects of undertaken prevention measures. (author). 18 refs, 1 fig., 1 tab
