Optical properties of ion implanted polymer layers

Description

Polyethylene and polyamide-6 layers implanted by barium ions with energy 100 keV and dose loading range 1014 - 1017 cm-2 were investigated by means of the optical spectroscopy methods. It was shown optical absorption of the ion implanted polymers is caused by carbon nano clusters generated in tracks of impinging ions. A character of the radiation pyrolytic processes due to confined transfer of stopping energy of impinging particles to polymer matrix are changed essentially with increase of the implanted dose. At low dose loading (<1014 cm-2) the lower non limiting bonds (in polymer targets it is radiation defects) and carbon clusters with low level condensation are main products created in a truck. This products take part in forming of more extended carbon nano clusters on later stages of implantation. The broken bands at that are compensated effectively due to interaction with air oxygen. At doses more than 1016 cm-2 the process of forming of low dimension carbon structures during interaction of growing carbon clusters is prevailing. It leads to decrease of quantity of oxygen trapping centres in the implanted layer. The finish of forming of the surface carbonized layer at high dose implantation leads to creation of system of electroconducting carbon clumps which connected by saturated and dangling bridges and capable for effective charge exchange. It is a reason of qualitatively new electric properties of the implanted polymer materials
