Low-energy total electron scattering cross section and electron affinity for NO

  • 1. Australian National Univ., Canberra, ACT (Australia). Research School of Physical Sciences

Description

High-resolution time-of-flight electron spectroscopy has been used to measure the low-energy (0.2-5 eV) total electron scattering cross section for NO. A large number of strong features due to intermediate, vibrationally excited resonance states of NO- are observed to dominate the total cross section for energies below 2 eV. These are analysed to reveal spectroscopic constants for the low-lying 3Σ- and 1Δ levels of NO- and an electron affinity for NO of 33 ± 10 meV is deduced, in reasonable agreement with previous measurements.
