Like all industries, civil nuclear power generates wastes. Although very small in volume, these wastes are the subject of much public debate. Nuclear wastes are heterogeneous, their characteristics varying according to their respective period of radioactivity. The vast majority of nuclear wastes - nearly 97% - are low-level and non-hazardous. They represent only 0.2% of their total radioactivity. Wastes, whatever their type, are subject to rigorous management and treatment in compliance with strict rules laid down by specialized and dedicated authorities. Their specific management ensures the protection of the population and the environment. Wastes are stored in highly secure centers. Waste management is a major safety issue for the nuclear industry. The nuclear authorities (Andra, IRSN) have already ensured secure long-term storage of the least hazardous waste, ruling out any possibility of risk. The most radioactive wastes, with the longest period of activity (less than 3% of the accumulated total), represent more than 99% of radioactivity. They are the subject of cutting-edge research. The Cigeo deep disposal project will provide secure storage for several millennia, pending the development of ways to recycle waste for energy optimization. France's electronuclear industry is at the cutting edge of technology, with a mastery of waste treatment. Numerous treatment and recycling methods are currently in the research and development phase, with a high probability of success. In addition to being the most carbon-free form of energy, they would make nuclear power the cleanest source of energy in the world, and the safest for human health

Le nucleaire civil, comme toute industrie, genere des dechets du fait de son activite. Ces derniers, bien que tres faibles en volume, sont l'objet de debats dans l'opinion publique. Les dechets nucleaires sont heterogenes, leurs caracteristiques variant en fonction de leur periode respective de radioactivite. La grande majorite d'entre eux, pres de 97%, sont a faible activite et peu ou non dangereux. Ils ne representent que 0,2% de leur radioactivite totale. Les dechets, quelle que soit leur typologie, font l'objet d'une gestion et d'un traitement rigoureux respectant des regles strictes, lesquelles sont fixees par des autorites specialisees et dediees. Leur prise en charge specifique permet d'assurer la protection de la population et de l'environnement. Les dechets sont stockes dans des centres hautement securises. Leur gestion est un enjeu majeur de la securite de l'industrie nucleaire. Un stockage securise de long terme des dechets les moins dangereux est deja assure par les autorites nucleaires (Andra, IRSN) et exclut la possibilite d'un quelconque risque. Les plus radioactifs, dont la periode d'activite est la plus importante (moins de 3% du total accumule), representent plus de 99% de la radioactivite. Ils font l'objet de recherches a la pointe de la technologie. Le projet d'enfouissement en profondeur Cigeo assurera notamment un stockage securise pluri millenaire dans l'attente de moyens permettant le recyclage des dechets a des fins d'optimisation energetique. La France dispose d'une industrie electronucleaire a la pointe de la technologie integrant la maitrise du traitement des dechets. De nombreuses methodes de traitement et de recyclage sont actuellement en phase de recherche et developpement avec de fortes probabilites d'aboutissement. Elles feraient du nucleaire, en plus de l'energie la plus decarbonee, la source d'energie la plus propre du monde et la plus sure pour la sante humaine
