Influence on the results of effective dose in public individuals resulting from liquid effluent releases due to the IEA-R1 reactor power increasing

  • 1. Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares (IPEN), Sao Paulo, SP (Brazil)

Description

In order to evaluate the consequences in the environment surrounding IPEN/CNEN-SP facilities, due to the increase in IEA-R1 from 2 to 5 MW, the effective equivalent dose received by the public individuals was estimated. This study was carried out using a mathematical model that simulates the transport of pollutants in the Tiete-Pinheiros watershed, and also information on the local system and the source term for liquid effluents as well. The final result showed that although the final dose has increased from 4.0 x 10-5 mSv/year to 5.0 x 10-3 mSv/year, the environmental impact due to the normal operation of the IEA-R1 is still negligible. The annual dose estimated for the new condition of operation was below 1/10 of the primary limit for the public, as established by the International Commission of Radiological Protection as 1 mSv/year.
