Intussusception in adults

Description

Intussusception is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adults. The clinical findings are extremely variable. The most important clue to diagnosis is a history suggesting intermittent partial bowel obstruction. Plain abdominal X-ray, sonographic examination, barium enema and an antegrade peroral barium examination are valuable means to establish the diagnosis. Surgical reduction and, if necessary, resection are the treatment of choice for intussusception in adults. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Die Invagination ist ein seltenes Krankheitsbild im Erwachsenenalter. Die klinische Symptomatik ist ausserordentlich variabel. Den wichtigsten anamnestischen Hinweise zur Diagnose geben rezidivierende Darmobstruktionen. Uebersichtsaufnahmen des Abdomens, Sonographie des Abdomens, Kolon-Kontrasteinlauf und Magen-Darm-Passage sichern die Diagnose. Die chirurgische Reposition des Invaginates und, wenn erforderlich, Resektion des befallenen Darmsegmentes sind die Therapie der Wahl. (orig.)
