Study and construction of a new type of gaseous scintillator
Description
The characteristics and constructional details of a new type of gas scintillation counter is presented. It is shown that using an electric field in a cylindrical geometry and operating the counter in a proportional region, the number of photons due to the excitation of rare gas (argon) during the passage of an ionising primary particle, is considerably increased. The effect of the intensity of applied eletric field is discussed and it is shown that the use of suitable electric field improves the resolution of scintillation counter. The use of several Waveshifters for shifting the ultraviolet component of photon spectrum into the sensitive region of the photomultiplier tube is discussed and the experimental results are presented. A source of Am 241 was used to verify the influence of electric field on alpha spectra. (Author)

Apresentam-se as caracteristicas e os detalhes de construcao de um novo tipo de cintilador gasoso. Demonstra-se que utilizando um campo eletrico aplicado no contador, operando na regiao proporcional, com geometria cilindrica, o numero de fotons decorrentes da excitacao do gas nobre (argonio) durante a passagem da particula ionizante primaria, aumenta consideravelmente. Estuda-se o efeito da intensidade do campo eletrico aplicado, demonstrando-se que com o uso de um campo eletrico adequado a resolucao do contador de cintilacao e sensivelmente melhorada. Apresentam-se tambem os resultados experimentais obtidos com diversos conversores de comprimento de onda usados para converter o componente do espectro de fotons emitidos no cintilador, na regiao sensivel da fotomultiplicadora empregada. Utilizou-se uma fonte de Am 241 para verificar a influencia do campo eletrico na forma do espectro alfa. (Autor)Files
