Siting of a Swedish deep geological repository: An issue of safety and democracy. Keynote address

  • 1. Swedisch Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co., Stockholm (Sweden)

Description

Siting has been started in Sweden for a deep geological repository for encapsulated spent nuclear fuel. It is based on a voluntary process and currently involves four municipalities. A deep repository project is a sensitive issue and it has to be managed accordingly. The keys to successful siting are believed to be excellence in safety matters and an open and democratic decision making process with the active participation of all parties concerned. (author)
