Experimental study of a thermal shock in carbon dioxide
Description
This PhD work focuses on the thermal shock during the contact between a hot solid and colder fluid. Intense heat transfers from the solid to the liquid could generate strong mechanical response due to the expansion of the fluid and its vaporization. For nuclear power plants safety studies, such thermal shock could be encountered during the hypothetical release of fuel within coolant during a so-called reactivity induced accident. In this work the experimental and theoretical study of such thermal interaction is considered through a specific test section. This test section permits to transfer a high amount of energy (500 J) toward pressurized liquid carbon dioxide in a small amount of time (5 ms). The experiments performed revealed how pressure transients are related to the vapour creation and dynamics. Such transient has been modelled by a differential equation which compares the dynamics of the vapour growth and the dynamics of pressure increase in the vapour at constant volume. Following the first pressure transient, a massive generation of vapour has been observed, as well as a characteristic bubbly flow. A large number of experiments has been performed over a wide range of test conditions. These conditions allowed varying the energy deposited in the fluid and its properties that has been expressed thanks to three non-dimensional numbers. The intensity variations of the resulting thermal shock phenomena have been studied thanks to these non-dimensional numbers. (author)
Abstract (French)
Ce travail de these s'interesse a la phenomenologie du choc thermique entre un corps solide chaud et un fluide pouvant s'evaporer. Pour des conditions d'intense transfert thermique, on observe des phenomenes mecaniques violents associes a des pics de pression et des mises en mouvement du fluide du fait de son expansion. Dans le cadre de l'etude de la surete nucleaire des reacteurs a eau pressurisee, ils pourraient resulter d'une hypothetique liberation du combustible chaud hors du crayon lors d'un scenario d'accident de reactivite. Le travail considere l'etude experimentale et theorique de ce type d'interaction a l'aide d'un banc d'essai permettant de deposer une quantite d'energie importante dans du CO2 liquide pressurise. On a ainsi pu relier la generation d'un pic de pression a la creation de vapeur sur un element chauffe tres rapidement, phenomene qui a ete modelise a l'aide d'une equation faisant le bilan entre la dynamique de croissance de bulle et la dynamique d'accroissement de pression de ladite bulle a volume constant. Apres le pic de pression, on observe une generation massive de vapeur et un ecoulement a bulles. L'analyse de l'ensemble du transitoire a ete menee sur une large gamme de conditions d'essai et les tendances de l'intensite des phenomenes ont ete etudiees en fonction de nombres sans dimension traduisant l'evolution des proprietes du fluide et la quantite d'energie deposee
