Analysis of phosphorus in Rock Phosphates using instrumental fast neutron activation analysis technique

  • 1. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, (Nigeria). Physics Dept.

Description

The technique of Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis was applied to quantitatively analyse for phosphorus in phosphate rocks. Three sets of samples of phosphate rocks of Sokoto deposit, masses 192g, 180g and 200g were irradiated with fast neutrons from a 5Ci Am-Be isotopic source. The samples were counted using a sodium iodide detector and analysed with a multichannel analyser system - a Nucleus PCA. The results show phosphorus concentrations of 15.88± 0.57%, 5.11 ± 0.21% and 2.21 ± 0.12% for the three samples. The result for the first samples compares well with that obtained using chemical method
