Quantitative classification of galaxies
Creators
Description
A brief review is given of quantitative classification of galaxies. Results of the major studies based on principal component analysis (PCA) are summarized. Two-dimensionality of normal disk galaxies is confirmed. PCA is performed on one of the most extensive samples of elliptical galaxies available to date. This new, though preliminary, PCA study shows the potential importance of axial ratio as a parameter in a quantitative classification scheme. The role of principal component analysis in the study of quantitative classification of galaxies is discussed. 44 refs
