One-electron reduction of different unsubstituted quinones in aqueous-organic mixed solvent studied by pulse radiolysis

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Chemistry Div.

Description

The spectral and acid-base characteristics of the semiquinones of different unsubstituted quinones, 1,4-benzoquinone (BQ), 1,4-napthoquinone (NQ), 9,10-anthraquinone (AQ), and 5,12-naphthacenedione (NpQ) were investigated in aqueous organic mixed solvent. The redox characteristics of these quinones vary widely and are interpreted in terms of their electron affinities. The rate constants of formation of these quinones fall in a range of 1-5x109 dm3 mol-1 s-1, whereas their decay rate constants fall in a wide range from 3.2x108 dm3 mol-1 s-1 to still lower values.
