Radiolysis study of the radical-like action mechanisms of an antioxidant: Sulfarlem

Description

Sulfarlem or p-anisyldithiolthione (ADT) is a sulfured heterocyclic compound which exhibits antioxidant properties. This work presents the quantitative study of the mono-electronic exchange mechanisms involved in this action. This study has been performed by gamma radiolysis and pulse radiolysis. The gamma radiolysis of ADT aerated ethanolic solutions has shown that O2. and RO2. radicals are not reactive towards ADT. In return, ADT is an efficient scavenger of R. radicals; the rate constant of this reaction being k (ADT + R.) = 6.7 x 104 mol-1.l.s-1. The pulse radiolysis experiments allowed the characterization of ADT reduction by the solvated electron (k (esolv- + ADT) = 2.3 x 1010 mol-1.l.s-1), the determination of the absorption spectrum of the reduced species A. (maximum wavelength = 580 nm) and the rate constant of its evolution (k (A. + A.) = 5.7 x 108 mol-1.l.s-1). An analogous study has been performed with ADO, an ADT oxidized derivative, which appeared to be a less efficient free radicals scavenger. (author)

Abstract (French)

Le sulfarlem ou p-anisyldithiolthione (ADT) est un compose heterocyclique soufre qui possede des proprietes antioxydantes. Ce travail presente l'etude quantitative des mecanismes d'echange monoelectronique impliques dans cette action. Cette etude a ete effectuee par la methode de la radiolyse gamma et de la radiolyse pulsee. La radiolyse gamma de solutions ethanoliques aerees d'ADT a montre que les especes radicalaires O2. et RO2. ne semblent pas reactives vis-a-vis de ADT. En revanche, ce dernier est un capteur efficace des radicaux libres hydroxyethyle R.; la constante de vitesse de cette reaction etant: k (R. + ADT) = 6.7 x 104 mol-1.l.s-1. Les experiences de radiolyse pulsee ont permis de caracteriser la reduction de l'ADT par l'electron solvate (k (esolv- + ADT) = 2.3 x 1010 mol-1.l.s-1), de determiner le spectre de l'entite reduite A. (longueur d'onde d'absorption maximale = 580 nm), ainsi que la constante de vitesse de son evolution par reaction biradicalaire (k (A. + A.) = 5.7 x 108 mol-1.l.s-1). Une etude analogue a ete effectuee sur un derive oxygene: l'ADO, connu pour etre un moins bon antioxydant, et qui s'est avere etre un capteur de radicaux libres moins efficace que l'ADT. (auteur)
