Solvent Extraction Separation of Cobalt and Nickel from Thiocyanate Medium by Cyanex-921 in Kerosene

  • 1. Hot Laboratories Centre, Atomic Energy Authority, Post Code 13759, Cairo, (Egypt)

Description

The extraction of Co(II) and Ni(II) from sodium thiocyanate medium by Cyanex-921 in kerosene has been investigated. The effects of the concentration of extractant, hydrogen ion and thiocyanate as well as temperature were separately studied. The stoichiometry of the extracted species were found to be M(SCN)2.2 L where M=Co(II) or Ni(II) and L=cyanex-921. The increase in temperature was found to decrease the extraction of both metals. The stripping of the extracted metal species from loaded Cyanex-921 in kerosene was also studied using different stripping agents. The results are used to assess the conditions for maximum nickel/cobalt separation from thiocyanate medium
