Formation, development and tasks of the ''State Institute for Environment, Measurements and Nature Conservation Baden-Wuerttemberg'' are described. They include, for instance, nature protection and climatic consequences as well as production safety, environmental techniques, water cleanliness and soil protection. However, above all the evaluation and recording of radioactivity and the measurement of ionizing radiation were from the beginning some of the main assignments. Today very important are research of the presence of radioactivity in the environment, measurement of radiation levels around nuclear facilities and support of the nuclear inspectorate in questions of radiation protection.
